Town twinning, Easington : Baesweiler

The 'pledge of partnership' between Easington and Baesweiler was officially signed in 1975 with an aim to develop mutual friendship, understanding and respect. A commitment was also given to promote human and cultural relations between the citizens of both our towns and above all to bring together our young people in the spirit of understanding.

Baesweiler is situated in the country in North Rhine-Westphalia, and is fifteen kilometres north of the city of Aachen, Germany.  Baesweiler is made up of the townships of Baesweiler, Setterich, Beggendorf, Oidtweiler, Puffendorf, Loverich and Floverich and has a total population of 28,000,

Historically Baesweiler was a mining and farming area, similar to Easington and following the closure of its mines has attracted many small and medium size enterprises to their region, both national and international. Baesweiler is committed to improve and modernise its structure, attract new investment and jobs, secure existing jobs and increasing the quality of life for its citizens.

An active exchange programme is in existence and we actively encourage new groups to become involved. The current programme involves two visits per year to Baesweiler to participate in their Karneval (February/March) and Kirmes (May/June) celebrations. A return visit to Easington takes place in May each year. Participants are encouraged to stay with host families but this is not essential.

As a result of this programme many close friendships have developed over the years and numerous private visits now also take place.
