Quality Service for our people
The District is committed to significantly reducing poverty through raising awareness of and supporting the take up of benefits such as Pension Credit and for those most at risk of social exclusion such as the persistently poor, women and children, lone parent and single pensioner households.
Striving to achieve excellence in the workplace
Numeracy and Literacy are two issues which the District is addressing through the Lifelong Learning Strategy and the District's business support service. Both of these initiatives empower employees and support employers to address inequalities in the labour market.
Sustainable jobs for everyone
Unemployment is generally considered a key indicator of social exclusion and it is concentrated in the North East, but there are still pockets of 'jobs gap', which the District is exploiting to the full. It is achieving sustainable employment opportunities in the labour market through support to businesses and supply of retail premises.
Decent homes for all
Structural and social factors are involved in addressing social inclusion and housing requirements for people at the margins of the housing market. They may be economically weak, suffer from unemployment, inequality of family breakdown leading to them being unable to access decent housing, the District is addressing these issues through a variety of strategies which are being developed in partnership with East Durham Homes.
Clean, tidy Communities
Through the work of the Local Strategic Partnership's Environmental sub group, issues relating to awareness of neighbourhoods, self esteem and pride in the area is being addressed. Through the work of the Youth Forum young people are directly involved in service planning and delivery.
Better Transport
Due to the District's semi rural environment transport is one of the main concerns being addressed both on a regional and local bases. The District gives financial support to transport services which are delivered throughout the Voluntary and Community sector, as well as working in partnership at a County level to lobby for local services.
Making the District safe
The District is one of the lead members of the Crime Reduction Partnership and every three years develops a Community Safety Strategy and Action Plan. Initiatives include security lighting and the formation of a Social Inclusion Management Committee, which is a sub group of the Crime Reduction Partnership. This group addresses issues relating to young people. Other initiatives have been the development of an Anti Social Behaviour Unit, which has been established in partnership with Durham Police and the County Council.
Building a healthy community
Working in partnership with the PCT the District is addressing issues relating to service delivery, teenage pregnancy, mental well-being, disability, drugs and self help groups.
