Recycling

Two service improvements were developed in line with the need to meet and exceed government recycling targets.

About this service

Green waste recycling

Green Waste Bin

Liveability funding piloted a kerbside collection system for green waste recycling.  15,000 properties were included in the scheme in 2005 and more than 1,200 tonnes of green waste was collected and composted.  Collections for this year have now started again with an extra 600 properties being added to the scheme.

Anyone not included in the scheme areas can contact Envirocall for a special collection on (0191) 5275040.

Furniture recycling

Furniture Recycling2

Liveability funding has been used to develop a household furniture-recycling scheme within East Durham for the benefit of all residents in the District of Easington.

East Durham Furniture Re-use now has a permanent home in an industrial unit at Sea View Industrial Estate, Horden.

The project links closely with the District’s Envirocall Service. Householders in the District can arrange to have unwanted items of furniture and electrical goods removed for free.  The council collects a wide range of household waste free of charge from carpets, washing machines, fridges, freezers and televisions to tables, beds, sofas, chairs and wardrobes as well as chests of drawers, dressing tables, hi-fi units, hoovers, packaging, sideboards and many other items.

This is a permanent service which is open to householders around the district throughout the year.  To arrange a special collection contact Envirocall on (0191) 527040.

Any items of furniture which are in good enough condition to be re-used can be collected free by EDF Re-use where they are refurbished and sold back to the public and voluntary and charitable organisations at low prices.  For information about this service call (0191) 5184394.  Alternatively you can visit EDF Re-use’s showroom which is open Monday to Thursday, 9am-4pm and Friday 9am-3pm.

In addition to provision of the furniture service, the enterprise has created jobs, training places and volunteering opportunities for residents.
