Development Control deals with the processing of planning applications involving proposals to build on land, modify buildings, changes of use, advertisement consent, listed building consent and other related matters.
When considering planning applications we are obliged to take account of local plan policies, government guidance and the individual merits of each scheme in order to develop the District in the public interest.
If you want to make a planning application we can give you free guidance on the relevant policies and other issues you will need to consider to give you the best chance of success. We can do this by way of replying to our standard proposals form (in the case of household extensions), or by way of a more detailed letter (for other proposals). You can also contact an Officer by making a telephone call, e-mailing or arranging to visit the Council Offices for informal advice.
If you want to comment on a planning application we welcome your views and can guide you through the considerations the Council is able to take into account in making a decision. It is important to understand that planning decisions are required to be based on the policies of the Council's Local Plan, which in turn reflect national and county-wide strategic policies.
Although there are many things you can do without the need for planning permission, it is always better to check before you start work.
