The Council has powers to protect trees by making Tree Preservation Orders. The Council will send copies of these Orders when proposed to the landowner concerned and explain the reason for making them. The landowner will have a chance to comment on any Order before it comes into force. In most cases, the Council must be notified of and approve any work on a protected tree before it is undertaken. Trees in Conservation areas are also protected. You cannot carry out most pruning works to any protected tree which is over a certain size without giving the Council an opportunity to consider protecting the tree by an Order. Consent is also required for the removal of certain hedgerows. The Council can refuse to allow this by serving a ‘Hedgerow Retention Notice’.
