The District of Easington has established 4 areas whose character and appearance should be preserved or enhanced. These are called conservation areas. They are located in Castle Eden, Easington Village, Hawthorn and Seaham. Applications in these areas have to be considered very carefully.
There are a number of additional planning controls in conservation areas which include control over the demolition of buildings, strengthened control over minor developments including various types of cladding, dormer windows, satellite dishes, masts and antennae and provision for the protection of trees. If you are unsure whether your proposal requires consent you should contact the Planning Unit for advice.
