Employment advice for the disabled

District of Easington is an Employment Service Disability Symbol user. In using the symbol we are building on our existing good practice, and in particular we are committed to the following when recruiting and employing disabled people:

About this service

General advice - employers and employees

Anyone employing people must comply with health and safety law, notify the enforcing authority (the Council or the Health and Safety Executive) and provide health and safety information to their employees.

For advice on workplace safety regulations, see Health and Safety at Work

Advice about the Working Time Regulations is available from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)

or the ACAS website

Information about employing disabled people, and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 is available from the Equality Direct website

or the Disability Rights Commission

Under the Disability Discrimination Act, employers of 15 or more people now have a legal duty to make their workplace accessible to people with mental health problems.

The DTI website TIGER  - Tailored Interactive Guidance on Employment Rights - has information on maternity rights, paternity rights, adoption rights, and flexible working rights.

The Employment Relations section of the main DTI website   covers hours of work and part-time work, pay entitlement and the National Minimum Wage, public holidays, employment agency standards, individual employment rights, redundancy arrangements, employee consultation, trade unions and collective rights.

Advice for employers on best practice can be obtained from the DTI Partnership at Work Fund and the DTI Great Place to Work website

For younger people, a free interactive CD is available that promotes the work and services of local government, please contact Jamie Henderson (Personnel) for a CD (or multiple CD's) to be sent.
