Sheltered Accommodation

Sheltered Housing

Sheltered housing is a collection of flats and bungalows grouped together and linked by means of an intercom system to a Warden, however, in schemes where there is no Warden, the properties are linked directly to the Control Centre.

Sheltered accommodation is normally provided for people aged 60 years and over.  The emphasis remains on the tenant’s ability to lead an independent life.  The tenants have to be able to cook for themselves as they would in ordinary housing.  Other than the security of knowing that there is someone on call in an emergency, the tenancy of a sheltered flat or bungalow is the same as that of any other council property in that the tenant lives independently, pays rent and is responsible for the cleanliness of their own dealing.

There are various categories of sheltered housing:

  1. Properties with a warden and communal hall, or

  2. Flats contained in one building;
    Bungalows and flats with own separate entrance which have access to a warden and a communal hall;
    Bungalows and flats linked directly to the warden control centre.

  3. The communal halls are provided for social activities.  If you require any information about the Warden Service please telephone: 0191 527 1089/1090 any time of the day or night OR 0191 527 0501 ext 4550/4339/4341 or if you require any information about sheltered housing allocations please telephone: 0800 0320835.
