Cavity wall insulation

House Logo

This is the most cost-effective way of reducing heat loss in the home after loft insulation. Up to 35% of the heat lost in an average home is lost through the walls.

Badly insulated walls lose more heat than any other part of your home and could be costing you up to an extra £200 a year in energy wastage. Cavity wall insulation is a simple solution which can reduce heat loss through the wall by up to 60%.

Wall insulation is often the most cost effective. The first step is to identify the type of walls that you have in your home. This will help you to determine what type of insulation is required.

Cavity walls are common in the majority of homes built after the early part of the 1930s. You can tell if your home has cavity walls by measuring the thickness at any door or window. Cavity walls are at least 300mm (12 inches) thick and are comprised of an outer and an inner layer separated by a small air gap.

Cavity wall insulation is straightforward, inexpensive and causes only a minimal amount of disruption to your home. Although the work has to be carried out by a professional costs are likely to be recovered within 5 years.

Installation is simple and will take less than a day to complete. However, as it is a specialist job, you will need to use an expert.

Always use a recommended installer who can guarantee the work for 25 years by using Cavity Wall Insulation Guarantee Agency (CIGA).

Cavity wall insulation grants are available under the Durham Energy Savers scheme. For more information contact the Tees and Durham Energy Advice centre on 0800 512 012 or contact TADEA at their email address tadea.co.uk
