Members allowances

The Local Authorities (Members Allowances) (England) Regulations 2001 require all Councils to establish an Independent Remuneration Panel which advises the Council on its Members Allowances Scheme and the amounts to be paid. The allowances currently payable are based on the recommendations of the Panel. 

The types of allowances payable to Members are as follows:

• Basic and Subsistence allowance - payable to all Members. This allowance recognises the time commitment of Members and the responsibilities they have for carrying out their duties;
  
• Special Responsibility Allowance - paid to Councillors with specific responsibilities including the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Council, Leader and Deputy Leader, Executive Members and the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of Committees, Panels, Forums and Boards. The allowances paid vary according to the level of responsibility;
  
• Travelling Allowance;
  
• Childcare and Dependent Carers Allowance.
