Older persons travel pass

From 1st April 2008, all residents in County Durham who are aged 60 or over are entitled to a pass which gives free travel on 'local' buses anywhere in England, as well as locally in and around County Durham.  A Half fare train travel is available on a limited number of trains (restrictions apply) and the park and ride system in Durham may be used free of charge.

The pass can only be used by the named person and must be shown to the driver on every journey made.

What you must do

For your first pass you will need to apply in person to Building 9 reception, Council Offices, Seaside Lane, Easington Village (see visiting map from right panel) .There is no need to provide a photograph as we take them on site, however you will need to provide proof of age and residence. 

Documents accepted as proof age:

As well as proof of age, proof of residence is also required and can be a council tax bill, utility bill or bank statement.

 

What are the charges for this service?

At present, there is no charge for the issue of both new and replacement travel passes.

When can I apply?

Applicants may apply up to a week before their 60th birthday to allow for the external production and postage of the new passes which may take between 5 and 10 working days.

 

What happens if my pass is lost or stolen?

Lost or stolen passes should be reported immediately to Customer Services at the District of Easington.  You can do this by either telephoning the council offices on 0191 5270501 or in person to Building 9 reception at the Council Offices.

Once reported, replacement passes can take between 5 and 10 working days to be received.

When can I use my pass?

For bus travel there are no time restrictions travelling around or leaving from County Durham.  Outside of County Durham the pass can be used from 09.30 to 23.00, Monday to Friday and all day Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays.

Can I use my pass on bus services to and from neighbouring areas?

The pass can be used on all local public services, including local stop express services.
