Single unitary proposal
The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) announced in December 2007 its preference for County Durham to move to a single unitary form of local government.
The proposal was subject to a 12 week consultation between 27 March and 22 June 2007 involving partners/stakeholders including all local authorities, the wider public sector (e.g. police, health, Learning and Skills Council, RDA), business community and the voluntary and community sectors. Prioritisation
Between 6 June and 18 July 2007 the Government invited views on the proposed means of prioritising proposals for future unitary structures submitted in response to the Local Government White Paper Strong and Prosperous Communities. To see the consultation document please select the link below.
Implementation
All councils responded to a Government discussion paper “Councils’ proposals for unitary local government; an approach to implementation”. This sets out how the Government wants implementation to proceed and if you would like to see a copy of the discussion paper, please select the link below.
