Million poop scoops

A million more free poop scoop bags are being given away to dog owners in East Durham as the council continues its battle against dog fouling.

District of Easington is handing out a second batch of bags following the success of its first Million Poop Scoop Giveaway in January.

The original initiative was launched to encourage owners to clean up after their pets but also to remind them of the possible consequences of failing to do so.

Ian Hoult, Environmental Services Manager, said: “Dog fouling is a criminal offence and we always take action against anyone we see breaking the law.

“Last year, for example, we issued 95 fixed penalty notices for dog fouling and we also successfully pursued prosecutions against a number of people who either failed to pay the fine or repeatedly allowed their dog to foul.

Under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, anyone who fails to clean up after their pet could face an £80 fixed penalty fine or even a court appearance which could result in a further fine of up to £1,000.

District of Easington Council has used the money it has collected in fines to buy the poop scoop bags.

Bags are available from parish councils, community centres, schools and other venues across the district.
