New recycling scheme coming your way

Green-minded households will be able to recycle more of their waste when a new scheme is launched next month.

From April, people living in District of Easington will able to recycle plastics and cardboard, as well as paper, glass and cans, under a new agreement.

Residents will be given large green reusable bags for the extra waste, which will be collected at the same time as their black recycling boxes.

The move is being introduced to further boost recycling rates in East Durham. Last year District of Easington recycled more than 34 per cent of its waste, far exceeding Government targets.

The authority puts its success down to a combination of factors, including residents recycling more, the introduction of a green waste collection service, a furniture reuse scheme, and the recovery of recyclable materials such as compost from waste treatment processes.

Greencycle, a recycling company that helped double recycling rates in Congleton, Cheshire, in the first month it worked there, will take over the scheme under a two year contract, with the option of extending it a further two years.

It will also provide a recycling education officer to the district who will work with schools and communities to raise awareness of recycling.

In addition, the company will also donate £2 for every tonne of waste it collects to local environmental charities. For further information call Envirocall on (0191) 527 5040.
